World Boxing Council flyweight champion Marlen Esparza (12-1, 1 KO) of Houston, Texas is ready to defend her crown against former champion Eva “La Ley” Guzmán (19-1, 11 KOs) of Maracay, Venezuela, on Saturday, August 6 at the Dickies Arena in Fort Worth, Texas.
Esparza, born in Houston, Texas, began her boxing career at age 12 after growing up in a home that loved and lived the sport. In May 2012, Esparza became the first American woman to qualify to compete in the 2012 London Olympics, the first year that women’s boxing made its debut as an Olympic event. She won the bronze medal in the flyweight division.
In 2021, Esparza had a successful year, with a unanimous decision victory against Ibeth Zamora for the WBC World Flyweight Championship.
Eva Guzman, who was already a world champion, comes to this fight after defeating her compatriot Yanetsy Gomez last November.
Esparza registered 111.8 pounds, while Guzmán was 109 pounds.
