World Boxing Council featherweight champion Mark “Magnifico” Magsayo, will defend his title for the first time against also undefeated and former super bantamweight world champion, Rey Vargas, on Saturday, at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas.
Magsayo shocked the boxing world last January when he defeated long-time reigning champion Gary Russell Jr. Now, Magsayo looks to prove the win over Russell was a planned progression.
Vargas will try to dethrone Magsayo, building on a dazzling career, of four years at 122 pounds.
They were face to face this Thursday at a press conference and Mark said:
“Vargas always backs down in every fight. I hope h doesn’t run too fast as it will be a knockout if he doesn’t run too much.
“To win this fight, I will have to use my footwork. The guy is tall and he’s going to run, so I need to make adjustments, like in the Gary Russell fight.
“I saw his training, his combat. He always goes backwards, backwards, staying away from his opponent. In the gym, we have trained for different styles. Whatever his style is in this fight, we are ready”
Rey commented:
“I prepared very well for this fight. I am always looking to improve and step into the ring as the best version of myself. The hard work is done, now I’m just focusing on what’s going to happen on fight night.
“I’m not over confident, but I know how hard I worked and what I’m capable of. Magsayo will come out strong with a lot of energy, but we will counter him. That’s when I`ll rip his head off. Mexico vs. The Philippines has always been a great rivalry. It is a guaranteed show that you cannot miss. This fight is not going to be the exception.
“Mexican fans are spicy, hotheaded and passionate. They always come out and show their support for their countrymen. They will do it once again and I am very grateful to have their support every time I face a new challenge.”
