On April 23, 1977, Carlos Zárate and Alfonso Zamora, two Mexican world champions, got into the ring with a combined record of 75 wins and 74 knockouts. Without a doubt, Zárate vs. Zamora or “The War of the Zs” was one of the most anticipated fights between Mexicans in the history of boxing.
Zárate arrived as the World Boxing Council bantamweight champion. Zamora as the only Mexican to win an Olympic medal and the world championship as a professional.
The rivalry between these two fighters went beyond the ring. Once stablemates and close friends, Zárate and Zamora took different paths that crossed again at the Forum in Inglewood, California.
More than 4 decades have passed since this fight and the mysticism it gives off is still amazing. For this reason, Pepe Sulaimán, with his unique vision, focused on the mission of telling this story from the perspective of two great journalists: José Luis Camarillo and Fernando Schwartz and the protagonists who are already over 70 years old and they now have an approach full of wisdom, resignation, learning, friendship, solidarity and hope.
Yesterday, the boxing family gathered at the Plaza Carso cinema to see the premiere of this new series by Pepe Sulaimán and the World Boxing Council, which has the firm mission of preserving the history of those who forged the foundations of our sport.
We would especially like to thank champions Carlos Zárate and Alfonso Zamora, who shared their demons, stories and anecdotes, making it possible for this project to come to fruition. We invite all boxing fans to stay tuned and not miss this emotional series, which we are sure will make you shed tears.
Great champions attended the event, such as Humberto “Chiquita” González, Daniel Zaragoza, Erik “Terrible” Morales, Rubén “Púas” Olivares, Francisco “Bandido” Vargas, Guadalupe Martínez plus WBC President, Mauricio Sulaiman.
