The great Mexican champion, Julio César Chávez, appeared this Friday, March 28th, at the “La Mañanera del Pueblo” press conference, presented daily by Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo.
He will lead the highly anticipated National Boxing Class held by the Mexican government in conjunction with the WBC, in an effort to combat drug use, this coming Sunday, April 6, 2025.

During his participation in the conference, Julio, who has not used any drug for more than 16 years, commented: “Honestly, Madam President, thank you very much for this tremendous work against addictions, since Mexico is unfortunately going through difficult times, where there is a lot of drug addiction, where there is a lot of fentanyl that kills, not only destroys, but kills many people. Thank you for stepping into the ring against addictions.”
Likewise, the champion took the opportunity to present the President with a WBC world champion bracelet in recognition of the positive actions she has taken on behalf of the sport.

Also present was WBC president, Mauricio Sulaimán Saldívar, who commented:
“Julio César Chávez is the finest example for this campaign for peace and against addiction. We are very excited because it is already a reality. This coming April 6th, we will make history. We will turn Mexico into a unique place because never in the history of any sport, in any country, in any situation, has there been an event like the one that is about to happen: this National Boxing Class.
“I want to recognize the great work that Miguel Torruco has done, with a titanic effort that he has accomplished traveling to every state in the Mexican Republic.”

Miguel Torruco, National Director of Sports and Wellness Promotion, commented: “We estimate the participation of around one million people in this simultaneous physical activity. The main venue for the class will be Mexico City’s Zócalo, but there will be activities in various plazas throughout the country, led by the governors of each state.
“We will be joined by important champions, including Julio César Chávez, Óscar de la Hoya, Roberto “Manos de Piedra” Durán, among other boxing legends.”

Finally, the symbol that has traveled throughout Mexico, the WBC Belt of Peace, was presented for signature by President Sheinbaum, along with the signatures of 31 governors and the head of government of Mexico City.
