At the 1976 Montreal Olympic Games, Mexican boxer Juan Paredes had a great achievement by winning the bronze medal in featherweight, standing out among a delegation of 96 athletes.
To win the medal, Paredes beat Donato Albaes (Brazil), Yukio Odagi (Japan), Choi Choon-gil (Korea) and lost in the semi-finals to Angel Herrera (Cuba), who won the gold medal.
Montreal was not easy for Paredes, because he became the only hope for a medal in boxing, because his teammates Ernesto Ríos and Arturo Uruzquieta were eliminated in the first fight.
Upon winning the bronze medal, the President of the WBC, José Sulaimán, sent Juan a telegram congratulating him and reiterating his pride and that of millions of Mexicans who were following the competition.
