Undefeated Mexican-American José Carlos Ramírez, defended his World Boxing Council super lightweight title defeating Ukrainian Viktor Postol on points in a card held behind closed doors at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
Postponed twice this year due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the fight resulted to be very competitive, with a majority decision in favor of Ramírez, who won with scores of 114-114, 115-113 and 116-112 against Postol, who held the WBC championship from October 2015 to July 2016.
It wasn’t plain sailing for the champion. Postol intelligently used his significant height and reach advantages to good effect, also being highly mobile and evasive, to avoid toe to toe exchanges. As the fight wore on, Ramirez was sometimes able to close the distance to land some body punches and effective left hooks. Throughout, Ramirez`s punch impact were noticeably heavier.
Jose Ramírez got the 26th victory of his career, although in the end he confessed that he could “have done more”.
Viktor Postol, for his part, suffered his third defeat in 34 bouts. Ramirez could now face Britain’s Josh Taylor, who holds the WBA and IBF super lightweight titles.
