The World Boxing Council has formed a committee to review everything related to the fight held this past Saturday, June 14, in Bilbao, Spain, between local fighter Jon Fernandez and Panamanian Ricardo Nuñez.
The vacant super-lightweight international silver title was contested in this bout.
Ricardo Nuñez’s representatives have sent a formal protest regarding the fight’s decision, in which Nuñez was disqualified and, consequently, Fernandez was crowned champion.
The committee will review videos, supervisor reports, ring official reports, local boxing commission reports, and various other available reports for proper and thorough analysis.
It is very regrettable that instant replay technology was not available. This is a rule that the WBC instituted in boxing and is successfully used in many countries worldwide to review controversies and ensure justice at all times.
We hope to have the panel’s results as soon as possible. It’s worth noting that it was a great fight that unfortunately had a controversial action and ended in the third round.
