The WBC Board of Governors has finalized the voting process and has decided by a majority vote to change the result from a Disqualification to a technical draw.
Jon Fernandez from Spain fought Ricardo Nuñez from Panama for the vacant silver international championship in the superlightweight division on June 14th.
The fight was tremendous, a high quality battle which saw Nuñez dropped in the second round then hurt in the third but came back strong to surprise Fernandez with an explosive offensive attack which had Fernandez hurt on the same third round; Very unfortunately the fight ended in controversy in the third round when Fernandez received a large cut on the ear and after extreme confussion the referee ruled to disqualify the visiting boxer.
There was no technology available for the use of instant replay consequently the WBC could not use such procedure during this fight.
The WBC formed a panel who reviewed in detail the actions on video, with several angles and with slow motion and was able to make a final determination.
Nuñez ruling by the referee of an intentional foul which caused the cut has been over turned to an accidental foul due to the several actions which happened before and during the incident.
Both fighters have proven to be of high level and will certainly be rewarded for their efforts and performance in the next WBC ratings.
The WBC is hereby ordering a direct rematch for the vacant silver international super lightweight title
