WBC number one ranked bantamweight Jason Maloney (25-2, 19 KO`s), had to work hard against seasoned teak tough Thai Nawaphon Kaikanha who`s classified just one ranking below, when they clashed at the Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne, to gain a UD, as part of the co-promotion of the Haney Vs Kambosos 2 fight.
Jason utilized his consummate boxing skills, especially his accurate jab and ring generalship throughout. But Nawaphon kept coming, concentrating on the body attack, in spite of walking into a cascade of combinations to the head which reddened his rugged face, as the fight wore on. Jason dominated but had to be wary. The Thai Master switched to the head in the tenth shaking Jason with two powerful lefts, but Jason who is superbly conditioned weathered this and it never became a monsoon. He continued to pepper his salty opponent, who was appreciably slower and easier to hit, if not shake.
Jason who was more mobile and savvy, won a convincing 118-110, 118-110 and 119-109 UD, but it wasn`t altogether comfortable. His ribcage, belly and torso, will be rather sore from the battering it took in his bettering effort.
