Being and forever remaining a boxing champion in the hearts of the fans, means winning the title, but also passing the torch with grace when it`s time for a new champion to be crowned.
On Saturday night former world champion Jamel Herring lost a tough fight to NABF lightweight title holder Jamaine Ortiz.
Clad in his street clothes, Jamel knocked on rival´s changing room, was immediately invited in, welcomed, and told his victor: “ Jamaine I want to see you become world champion….Then he hugged Ortiz saying: “You were too quick for me tonight and you are a great fighter.”
A wonderful heartfelt tangible gesture, which is so appreciated. Both then spoke of their great mutual respect for each other. We need more of this in today`s boxing. It`s an example, especially for ever watchful and observant young fans who look up to our great boxers, and who seek to emulate and follow their tremendous example. It`s the ethos of gentleman, sportsmen and true champions. It defines boxing at its best in its finest moment.
The honour lineup in the photo shows Jimmy Burchfield , NABF President, Duane Ford, Ortiz and Herring. A handshake of real significance.
