We are just a few days away from commemorating 100 years of Jack Dempsey being crowned world heavyweight champion by defeating Jess Willard on July 4, 1919.
These days we will be remembering some important info from one of the greatest heavyweights in history.
Jack Dempsey and his appeal among fans produced the first box office that exceeded one million dollars. The first bonanza was on July 2, 1921 when he knocked out French idol Georges Carpentier in 4 rounds in a wooden arena built for an event presented by promoter Tex Rickard at “Boyle’s 30 acres”.
This fight also went down in history as the first one to be broadcasted on radio.
The box office for the fight against Carpentier was one million seven hundred and eighty nine thousand dollars. Other fights with great sales on box offices over one million dollars in which Dempsey participated, were against Luis Angel Firpo, Jack Sharkey and two against Gene Tunney.
