Errol “The Truth” Spence Jr. and Terence “Bud” Crawford, two superlative pound-for-pound fighters, were close at hand and face to face, prior to their style council duel for the undisputed welterweight championship, Saturday, at the T-Mobile Arena from Las Vegas.
In addition to this fantastic fight, “Filipino Flash” Nonito Donaire will face the Mexican Alexandro Santiago for the vacant World Boxing Council bantamweight title and the World Boxing Council Silver Lightweight champion, Mexican Isaac “Pitbull” Cruz, will fight undefeated Giovanni Cabrera.
Spence is the unified WBC, IBF and WBA welterweight world champion, while Crawford holds the WBO 147-pound world championship.
This showdown between undefeated shining stars, is the first undisputed welterweight world champion in the four-belt era. Spence vs. Crawford joins Sugar Ray Leonard vs. Thomas Hearns, Pernell Whitaker v. Julio Cesar Chavez and Floyd Mayweather vs. Manny Pacquiao, as a generational clash of two popular stars whose dynamic styles will produce a memorable classic.
Both warriors were face to face, almost cheek to cheek, but not yet dancing, in the final conference, yet promising a show of rare distinction. This was what they said:
“This is the biggest fight in boxing right now,” Spence said. “It is a legendary fight. It’s an old school fight. It’s like the fights my father used to tell me about. He is the best fighting the best.
“Terence is a great fighter but I am going to break him mentally and physically. I will be victorious.”
“This is definitely a legacy fight and a fight that should be talked about everywhere,” Crawford said. “This is an old school type of fight. All the greats have fought each other and that’s what we’re doing for this era.
“They are going to witness greatness. We measure greatness by times. On Saturday I’m going to show everyone why this era is the Terence Crawford era. No man has ever won indisputably in two weight classes. That will cement me as the greatest fighter of this era,” Crawford said.
