The schedule of World Boxing Council title fights has been gathering momentum and marching on apace, in the sixth month of the year, extolling and proving quality and vigor. Here is the hitlist, which has proved such a popular hit in June:
June 30th
In San Pedro, California, Battleship Iowa, along with the Los Angeles Police Department, the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department and the Los Angeles Fire Department, hosted the first-ever Battle in the Battleship, sanctioned by the State Athletic Commission Of California. This was the first time that the World Boxing Council supported such an important and historic event in Los Angeles, awarding medals to participants and a WBC belt to the winner of the main event.
June 29
Jesse Bam Rodríguez was crowned super flyweight champion by defeating Juan Francisco “Gallo” Estrada, in a great fight.
Yamileth Mercado managed to successfully defend her super bantamweight championship for the eighth time, defeating Ramla Ali by decision.
June 25th
At the Mexican League baseball field in Mexico City, Ana María Torres received the boxing family, but also the baseball family, as she celebrated her induction into the International Boxing Hall of Fame and the baseball team of the Mexica children’s and youth league, where her kids play, who won the tournament in the 9-10 year old category.
June 20-22
With the firm objective of continuing to care for the integrity and health of the boxer, the 3rd National Congress of Boxing Medicine FECOMBOX 2024 was held.
Interesting topics were discussed, such as the BOXMED app, post-fight sequelae, dental injuries, functions of the ring doctor, nutrition and hydration in boxing, among many more.
June 19
The WBC joins the commemoration of Juneteenth, a date that celebrates a continuous fight for equality and freedom by commemorating the emancipation of enslaved African Americans in the United States.
June 18
The President of the World Boxing Council, Mauricio Sulaimán, together with Lorena Cuellar Cisneros, Governor of the State of Tlaxcala, presented a historic boxing function that will be held at the Fairgrounds of this beautiful state on July 27.
June 16
At the New York Athletic Club James Mercante was honored by WBC Cares for his dedication to the sport and the community.
June, 15
The “100 Nights of Glory of the MGM Grand” event was held in one of the most important boxing venues in the world: the famous and legendary MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas.
David Benavidez was proclaimed interim light heavyweight champion of the World Boxing Council, after winning by unanimous decision over Oleksandr Gvozdyk.
Dominican Carlos Adames retained his World Boxing Council middleweight title after winning a unanimous decision over Terrell Gausha.
Dominican Alberto Puello was proclaimed interim super lightweight champion after winning by split decision over Gary Antuanne Russell.
June 14th
The WBC created the Juneteenth belt and called it the “Freedom Belt” in commemoration of this important date for the United States. The 2024 edition was presented to the Russell Boxing Dynasty as a way to honor the memory and efforts of Gary Russell Sr., who passed away in May 2022.
June 7th
The WBC President was present at a card presented by Don King at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Hollywood, Florida, in which Blair Cobbs defeated Adrien Broner.
June 6-9
The WBC President, Mauricio Sulaimán along with Jill Diamond, WBC Cares Chairwoman, Jill Diamond, attended to the celebrations of the International Boxing Hall of Fame in Canastota, New York.
June 6th
The Boxing Writers Association of America Awards were held, where many of our journalists and boxing personalities were honored.
June 4
Carmen Márquez presented at the traditional “Coffee Tuesdays”, her next event, the Great Amateur Tournament that will take place from July 18 to 20 in Aguascalientes, Mexico. This tournament includes the participation of 24 states of the Republic and will have the support of the WBC.
June 1
An exciting card called “Queensberry vs Matchroom 5 vs 5” took place at the Kingdom Arena in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, where great exponents of the two most important promoters in the United Kingdom faced off. In total, six fights took place, but five belonged to the 5 vs 5 series. Warren’s fighters prevailed over Hearn’s rivals; and they did so by winning all 5 fights, three of them by knockout, earning Warren recognition and a prize of 3 million dollars, given by His Excellency Turki Alalshikh.
World Boxing Council Middleweight Silver champion Hamzah Sheeraz (20-0, 16 KOs) scored an 11th-round TKO victory over No. 5 ranked Austin “Ammo” Williams (16-1, 11 KOs).
Willy Hutchinson (18-1, 13 KOs) scored a twelve-round unanimous decision victory over former world title challenger Craig “The Spider” Richards (18-4-1, 11 KOs), capturing the WBC Silver light heavyweight title.
