Golden Oldie! Cecilia Braekhus Conquers Second Division

Photos by Lina Baker

After having built  a brilliant chapter in the history of the welterweight division, establishing herself as a legend of the sport with 25 successful defenses of her World Boxing Council title, Cecilia Braekhus stepped into the ring at the Michelob Ultra Arena in Las Vegas at the age of 42 with the firm intention of conquering a second division.

The “Diva” Cornejo focused her attack on the body, throwing and landing clubbing rights accompanied by hooks, crosses and snappy combinations.

Cecilia Braekhus of Norway sent Maricela Cornejo to the canvas in the fourth round. During the fight she consistently landed the most solid and effective punches.

Cecilia Braekhus used all her experience, wile, ingenuity and savvy, to manage the pace, control the distance and win a highly entertaining competition, to take the victory by unanimous decision with cards of 96-93 and thus become the new interim WBC super welterweight champion.

At the end of the fight,  both embraced each other recognizing their efforts and showing marvelous sportswomanship.

Cecilia Braekhus improved her record to 38-2-1 and will soon be ready to face the absolute champion Ema Kozin, an opponent she was originally going to face but could not do so due to visa problems. Now she has progressed with this passport leading to the ultimate challenge.
