The legendary former world middleweight champion, Gennady “GGG” Golovkin, has formalized his candidacy for the presidency of World Boxing, the international body created with the crucial mission of ensuring that boxing maintains its status in the program of the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games and beyond.
“GGG’s” candidacy underscores the seriousness with which the global professional boxing community is addressing the sport’s Olympic crisis, placing one of its greatest legends at the forefront of the political and administrative battle. Golovkin, who already serves as President of the World Boxing Olympic Committee, is now seeking the highest office to guide the sport’s restructuring.
Golovkin’s candidacy comes at a time of great momentum for the young organization. World Boxing has made a monumental and exemplary effort under the direction of its current president, Boris van der Vorst, to establish a clean, transparent, and responsible governance structure, meeting the standards required by the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
The election for the presidency of World Boxing, to be held in Rome in November, will mark a decisive milestone for Olympic boxing. If elected, Gennady Golovkin will be transformed into the political face of a sport fighting for legitimacy and stability ahead of the maximal sporting event.
“Let’s build the future of boxing together,” is Golovkin’s message, resonating among federations and athletes who trust that his leadership can ensure boxing remains a platform for dreams and development for future generations of boxers.
The World Boxing Council (WBC), historically a leading voice in the sport, has provided its unconditional and essential support to the World Boxing initiative.
“We extend our most sincere congratulations to everyone involved in World Boxing for the tireless effort to protect the future of our sport in the Olympic Games. Seeing a legend like Gennady Golovkin join this cause in a leadership role is a powerful sign of commitment. The WBC reiterates its full support for World Boxing and its president, Boris van der Vorst, and congratulates ‘GGG’ on his brave candidacy.”
