Two-time world champion Danny “Swift” Garcia, returned to the ring after almost twenty months, to defeat his compatriot José Benavidez Jr. by majority decision, in the main event this Saturday at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.
Known as a counterpunching expert, blessed with a powerful left hook, Garcia attacked early and often, targeting Benavidez’s body and head. Garcia’s superior hand and foot speed left Benavidez following him for much of the night, looking to land right hands-on over Garcia’s left hook.
Two Judges scored 116-112 and 117-111 in favor of Garcia, while another scored 114-114.
Garcia had not fought since December 2020, when he was defeated by Errol Spence Jr.
In the post-fight interview, he acknowledged that this inactivity was caused by depression, anxiety and family issues. Garcia got very emotional talking about his mental health struggles during the post-fight interview, but concluded with a broad smile.
