WBC World Super Welterweight Champion Sebastian “The Towering Inferno” Fundora and former world champion Keith “One Time” Thurman came face-to-face during a press conference in Los Angeles.
This was part of the preview for the event they will headline on PBC Pay-Per-View on Prime Video, scheduled for Saturday, March 28, at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.
Fundora and Thurman were originally slated to meet last October before Fundora suffered a hand injury during a sparring session. Now, Fundora returns to action, and this bout will offer a fascinating clash of styles as part of an elite crossroads duel.
Tickets are available at AXS.com. The event is promoted by TGB Promotions and Sampson Boxing.
Here is what both fighters had to say:
SEBASTIAN FUNDORA
“We had this fight scheduled for October, before the hand injury, but now we are healthy and prepared. We’re going to get in the ring and do what we always do. I’m going to retain this title and remain world champion.
“We feel great. This is a fight the people wanted to see, and we are happy to deliver it. The injury was just one of those things that happen. We just had to wait for it to heal.
“The more time we have to prepare, the better. We are ready to go out and have a great night with Team Fundora on March 28.
“Thurman is an experienced boxer and in boxing anything can happen, but we train to be prepared for everything. When you do that, things go your way.
“A victory would be another great milestone in my career. It would prove that we are on the right path and taking the right steps.”
“We live and learn from our mistakes. We will be there on March 28 to show them what we are made of.
“I think everyone underestimates me. That’s part of the game. Regardless of what they say, you just have to go out and fight and show everyone what you’re made of.”
“This is the third time I’ve fought at the MGM Grand Garden Arena, and this time we are the main event. I am very grateful for the opportunity and I must make the most of it.”
KEITH THURMAN
“I already see the mistakes that, unfortunately, Fundora is going to make on March 28. But boxing is not about talking; it’s about acting inside the ring. Fundora is a man of few words, but many punches. Because of that, you can be sure this event will be a must-watch.
“Beating me would be the greatest achievement of your career, Fundora. Don’t kid yourself… You’ve been hit and you haven’t gotten up from the canvas. It will be my pleasure to make you live that again.
“I’m looking forward to boxing hard and giving a great performance to get that champion’s belt.”
“To me, the truly great champions are those who stumble and get back up again. That is what I am trying to do here and now.
“I am already an established Hall of Famer for what I achieved at welterweight. But what I love about this fight is that very few fighters from my generation are still active today. There is a plethora of young guys who have taken control, including Sebastian Fundora. I believe in my skill and talent. They call me the gatekeeper, but I am the final boss.
“The sparring sessions are going to be very solid for this fight. During the last training camp, I was already getting used to the difference in height and reach, and now I’m just activating that muscle memory for this camp. It was the first time I fought guys that tall, so having this additional time makes me feel more confident.
“My original trainer, Ben Getty, used to say: ‘If you do the homework, you pass the test.’ Now that we’ve had more time to study, I plan to pass with honors.
“I am very grateful to return to the ring. I wanted this dream to come true last year, but sometimes patience is a virtue. In this entire camp, we only have one thing in mind: knockdown!”
