As the famous song in the classic film Casablanca suggests: ”The fundamental things apply, as time goes by.”
Freddy Fundora has captured the essence of those fundamentals. He coaches his son Sebastian who is the Unified super-welterweight champion and daughter Gabriela, who has just become the Undisputed flyweight champion.
It`s an extraordinary success story, which might yet portend another fascinating chapter, because his youngest daughter Fabiola aged just ten has already fought and won her first amateur bout and is keen to become the third world champion in the family.
Gabriela has just been presented with her Green and Gold Belt by World Boxing Council President Mauricio Sulaiman at Mexico`s Chamber of Deputies. The Fundoras later adjourned for a well deserved dinner at the sumptuous China Girl Restaurant run by Alfredo Hong, at Av Prado Norte, Lomas Vireryes, Lomas de Chapultepec, where guests enjoyed a virtuoso performance from sixteen year old wunderkind violinist Silvia Fuentes.
Freddy who is affable and outgoing has utilized brilliant coaching skills plus focus, to help Sebastian and Gabriela reach the pinnacle of boxing achievement. He said: ”It is unusual to have two world champions in the family. It`s God`s blessing. We are a united team and we just stick to what we do.
”I started by changing their diapers, bought baby food for them and then coached them as youngsters and been their manager. It`s not really hard, but you have to do it each and every day. Sebastian and Gaby train together, side by side. They motivate each other. For Gaby to be a world champion aged just twenty two is incredible. It`s what God wanted.
”She has a mandatory coming up and will do that during the first couple of months of the coming year and then we`ll go from there. We are tyring to do everything by script, trying not to jump or skip anybody.
”For Sebastian, his first defence will be against Errol Spence at the end of March in Dallas, in the Cowboys Stadium and it`ll be a night to remember. We are in show business. In basketball you want slam dunks, if you are in football you want touchdowns, baseball homeruns, so in Boxing… it`s knockouts!
”My youngest daughter Fabiola aged ten is already keen on boxing and she`s a fighter, having won her first bout. She wants to emulate her brother and sister.” Fabiola herself said: ”I like boxing because of my brother and sister. I`ve always watched them and I always wanted to try boxing, so I started training and it is pretty easy for me. If you keep boxing it gets easier and easier, as practice makes perfect. In the future, I want to be a world champion…just like them!”
