Former world champion Danny ”Swift” García, 36, will promote his first boxing card in Philadelphia, on July 20.
Danny Garcia, who is still training and has no plans to retire from boxing, wants to become Philadelphia’s next big promoter.
Garcia will promote his first boxing card in Philadelphia at the 2300 Arena in South Philadelphia, a venue where he won twice before becoming a star. His company, DSG Promotions, had its first show last month at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City.
“I always knew he was going to be a promoter. I just didn’t know when. I feel like now is the time. That’s why we are working hard,” García commented.
“I want to be world champion in three divisions. It’s been two years since I’ve fought and I haven’t gotten my way, but at the end of the day, everything happens for a reason. When the time comes, I will be ready.”
Danny sees this advocacy project not just as a business, he seeks more to boost the neighbourhood that helped him become the champion. Now, he wants to support young talents so they can grow in the world of boxing.
“I like to do good things for my city. As a boxer I brought the championships to my city. I’m trying to rebuild my community. I try to be a role model for children and young people in Philadelphia.”
Garcia’s last fight at the 2300 Arena was in 2010 against Mike Arnaoutis, who fought for a world title three years earlier and was eight years older. Garcia heard people say that maybe the prospect wasn’t ready to fight such an opponent yet. They said Garcia’s career was being rushed. Garcia ignored him, knocked out Arnaoutis in the fourth round and two years later became world champion.
The card at the 2300 Arena will feature some of Philadelphia’s best young talent. Welterweight Johnny Rivera, who grew up in Garcia’s old neighbourhood and became a national amateur champion like Garcia. Rivera, 18, (2-0, two knockouts), turned professional in April and is promoted by Garcia.
The WBC and its President Mauricio Sulaimán wish our dear champion Danny García great success in this stage as a promoter and reiterate their support and admiration for him.
