Visibly proud of the memories and everlasting heritage to cherish, Mauricio Sulaimán Saldívar, President of the World Boxing Council, cut the symbolic opening ribbon with which the “Don José Sulaimán Chagnón” Museum was officially inaugurated, located within the facilities of the Quequi Newspaper, in the city of Cancun.
This Thursday, December 15, 2022, the WBC led by Mauricio Sulaian, directed the opening ceremony accompanied by Pepe Gómez, head of the promotions company “Cancún Boxing”; “Poti” Gómez, general director of the Quequi Group; Artemio Santos, Head of the Office of Governor Mara Lezama Espinosa; and Jesús Almaguer Salazar, president of the Cancun, Isla Mujeres and Puerto Morelos Hotel Association.
“I want to ask you to inaugurate this museum created in honor of your father,” Pepe Gómez told the boxing world leader, immediately adding that it was the first part of a gallery that will grow significantly. “We have a lot of room for growth,” he stressed.
The entrance to the nostalgic space exhibits a white BMW van that Don José Sulaimán Chagnón donated to his friend Pepe Gómez so that one day it would be in a museum, which has materialized.
In this vehicle, innumerable world elite boxing figures such as Muhammad Ali, Vitali Klitschkó, Roberto “Manos de Piedra” Durán, Julio César Chávez, promoter Don King, and many other stars were transported in Mexico City.
“This van represents the sum of the values founded on loyalty, friendship and gratitude towards the long-awaited leader who, as President of the World Boxing Council, left a more humane boxing as a legacy, constantly seeking actions aimed at protecting boxing and boxers” , also pointed out by the promoter Pepe Gómez, who was given the honor of being the protector of the special vehicle.
Later, the personalities admired the beautiful chair, an authentic work of art, where Muhammad Ali sat on the day of his coronation as “World King of Boxing” within the framework of the 50th Annual Convention held at the Grand Oasis Hotel in December 2012.
They also made reference to the throne occupied by Julio César Chávez González, the Great Mexican Champion in October 2019, when Mexican boxing paid him a well-deserved tribute within the framework of Convention 57 of the Green and Gold Giant.
“Without a doubt, this venue will result in an important tourist promotion for Cancun,” said Mauricio Sulaimán.
“I remember when the Japanese promoter Akihiko Honda saw ‘Rudy’ López fight in the ‘Noche de Campeones’ event in January 2006, who showed up to show that Cancun and the entire Quintana Roo were standing up against the devastating passing of Hurricane Wilma,” Suleiman added.
“I sincerely thank everyone involved for this beautiful tribute. Thank you very much to all.”
