The story of David “Red Flag” Benavidez unfurls, as one of the most unique in modern boxing.
Born on December 17, 1996, in Phoenix, Arizona, to a Mexican father and an Ecuadorian mother, the WBC light heavyweight champion went from being a severely obese teenager to one of the most respected lean burn fighters on the planet.
He began training in the gym at the age of three with the guidance of his father, José Benavidez Sr. However, in his adolescence, he struggled with serious weight issues, weighing as much as 250 pounds at just 13 years old. Through discipline, he managed to lose over 100 pounds. Although he had a brief amateur career, accumulating an undefeated record of 15 fights, the lack of opponents led him to decide to turn professional.
With devastating punching power, Benavidez made his professional debut on August 17, 2013. He later defeated Ronald Gavril to become the youngest WBC super middleweight world champion in history. His aggressive, high-volume style quickly earned him the nickname “The Mexican Monster.”
After a period of suspension due to an anti-doping sanction, he returned strong in 2019 and reclaimed the super middleweight title by knocking out Anthony Dirrell. He later added prestigious victories against Alexis Angulo, David Lemieux, Caleb Plant, and Demetrius Andrade, solidifying his career.
Benavidez then made the jump to light heavyweight (175 pounds). In 2024, he defeated Ukrainian Oleksandr Gvozdyk, becoming the interim WBC champion. Months later, in February 2025, he confirmed his dominance by winning a unanimous decision against David Morrell Jr. He was subsequently officially recognized as the light heavyweight world champion after the then-monarch, Dmitry Bivol, vacated the title. At just 28 years old, Benavidez is already a two-division champion and one of the most prominent names in international boxing.
Benavidez is not only a boxer with an implacable record and heavy hands; he is also an example of personal resilience. With no extensive amateur career, he became a professional who has already made history in two weight classes. His journey places him as one of the most important figures in the present and immediate future of world boxing.
David will defend his WBC light heavyweight world championship against Britain’s Anthony Yarde on November 22 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, as part of the “Ring IV” event during Riyadh Season.
