In a slugfest Asley Gonzalez defeated Lourdes Juarez by MD to take away her WBC super-flyweight title, at the Palenque Feria de Tepic extravaganza.
The Judges saw it as 96-94, 96-94 and 95-95. Asley who`s nicknamed Chiquita, reminiscent of the Great Humberto Gonzalez, was fighting and contesting in front of her home crowd and she launched a constant onslaught like a fighter possessed. Lourdes who`s nicknamed La Pequena Lulu, who prior to this hadn`t been defeated in eight years, and is an accomplished boxer at long range, was happy to stand her ground and trade. She often edged Asley for accuracy, but the younger boxer who has seven KO`s in her 15-2 career always had the advantage in power connects. Lourdes` record is 34-3, 3 KO`s.
As the fight passed the half way mark, Asley aged 29 appeared to be the stronger than Lulu, who is 35. A tremendous right hook from Asley snapped back Lulu`s head in round seven and Asley finished the fight in its entirety with a flourish. Lulu won the title off Guadalupe Martinez almost two years ago and she successfully defended the title three times before this defeat. It was a marvellous, lioness hearted fight with both bringing the crowd to their feet. Lulu who was cheered on by older sister Mariana “Barby” Juarez from ringside, lost but from the merit of her performance, surely deserves a rematch.
