Directed and guided by the renowned coach Alfredo Caballero, there have been sessions of up to 12 rounds of sparring against men. The 21-year-old Yamileth is aware that a victory over “Bella” Fernandez opens the way for het to have a rematch against absolute champion Fatuma Zarika from Kenya.
Last September Mercado went to Nairobi, Kenya the home of the champion to dispute the WBC Super Bantamweight title and at the end of ten intense rounds, the Judges announced a close split decision in favor of Zarika.
“I want retribution and with it, the World Boxing Council belt. Zarika and my promoter are willing to have the rematch soon but first I must win this. I want to thank Mauricio Sulaiman, President of the WBC, for providing opportunities to the talents and young people, so we can fulfill our dreams,” said an ambitious and fully focused Mercado
