The WBC family joined the Mexican sports community to commemorate the 30th Anniversary of an historic event for Mexico.
On August 7, 1992, Carlos Mercenario won the silver medal at the Olympic Games held in Barcelona, Spain, and yesterday, 30 years after that great achievement, we came together as a community to celebrate that historic event at the traditional Arroyo Restaurant located in south of Mexico City.
The celebration was attended by important Olympic athletes and great sports journalists from Mexico.
All of them dedicated words of recognition to the Mexican who won the silver medal in the 50 km walk at the Barcelona 1992 Olympic Games. Demonstrating that with dedication and effort everything is possible.
“It’s been many years, a lifetime, and I was left with the fact that I never thought of receiving so many thanks in 30 years, and I still receive some thanks from people for what I did that day. There are many memories, but when suddenly you are doing your day to day, and you are having new goals and in other projects, there is no lack of someone to remind you of it and it is something that is appreciated, ”said Mercenario.
“I thank everyone present, everyone who is here today remembering that day. Time flies, it seems impossible that 30 years have passed since that moment in Barcelona; It is one of the great achievements I have achieved in my sports career and I would not have achieved it without the support of my family.
“What I experienced on August 7, 1992 was special, but what it has left me since then has been a blessing. Thank you all so much for being here.”
World Boxing Council President Mauricio Sulaimán, commented that sport unites societies and what Carlos Mercenario has done is something that should always be remembered and recognized.
“With his achievement, Carlos has inspired thousands. Several generations grew up motivated by his achievements, by his effort and by his dedication. He showed us that everything is possible and that dreams are achieved, as long as we fight for them.”
To end the ceremony, Mauricio Sulaimán and Héctor Sulaimán presented a WBC Champion medal to the historic Mexican walker.
