The World Boxing Council Middleweight Champion, Dominican Carlos Adames, made his third successful title defence in convincing fashion, defeating Austin “Ammo” Williams by 12-round unanimous decision in the main event at the Caribe Royale in Orlando, Florida.
The bout began with high tension. Neither man was prepared to cede an inch, which may have been due, at least in part, to the constant verbal exchanges leading up to the fight. Adames, a Dominican training in Las Vegas, was originally scheduled to face Williams, of Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, in January, but was hospitalized on the day of the fight, leading to its postponement.
The first major moment of Saturday’s fight came from Adames, who dropped Williams with a double right hand clip, in the second round. Williams then appeared to daze Adames with a wild punch while Adames had him held tight.
From that point on, Adames began to apply calculated pressure, forcing Williams to fight on the defensive—a strategy that does not particularly suit a power puncher who usually attacks.
The fight highlighted a difference in technique between Williams, who was looking for one big shot to change the course of the fight, and the more polished Adames. Adames’ victory was emphatic, with scorecards of 118-110, 117-109, and 117-109.
With this win, he improved his record to 25-1-1 with 18 knockouts.
He remains undefeated since moving up to the middleweight category; his last loss was against Patrick Teixeira in a super welterweight bout.
Williams, 29, saw his four-fight winning streak snapped, leaving his record at 20-2 with 13 knockouts.
