Mexican Saul Canelo Alvarez has returned home to defend his undisputed super middleweight world title against British challenger John Ryder.
Canelo has not fought in Mexico since 2011 and hopes to get a big victory to thrill his fans, at the Akron Stadium in Jalisco.
This important bout between two nations with rich boxing histories will celebrate the World Boxing Council’s commitment to BoxVal, an integral part of Scholas Occurentes, Pope Francis’ non-religious foundation, which encourages and promotes world peace, especially among young people.
Scholas has designated Canelo vs. Ryder as “Fight for Peace” as a tribute to inclusion through joint efforts to build bridges and promote peace in the world. BoxVal (Boxing with Values) is Scholas’ boxing program that reaches all corners of the world through our sport and is administered by the WBC.
In true sportsmanship, even though both men are from different cultures and have different customs, they take pride in representing their countries. Following the WBC brotherhood tradition, both boxers are proud to be members of BoxVal, symbolically planting olive trees.
Boxing is a great equality enabler, uniting young people who seek and share common ground, through training and sports competition.
This Friday the traditional olive tree for peace ceremony was led by the state governor Enrique Alfaro, the President of the WBC Mauricio Sulaimán and Héctor Sulaimán, Representative of Scholas Ocurrentes in Mexico.
