Seventeen year old Sonoran Camila “Magnifica” Zamorano is the youngest Interim Champion to date, after convincingly and comprehensively defeating Japan’s forty one year old Mika Iwakawa via UD.
On home turf, at the Centro de Usos Multiples in Hermosillo, the youngest youngster unleashed a maestraful peformance way beyond her tender years, confirming a precocious promise which will yield so much more in the coming years.
From the outset and in search of the WBC interim Atomweight Belt, Camilla landed piston like left jabs, backed up by jarring, precise straight rights. She then doubled this up with dividends, going to the body.
By the fourth, Mika’s nose was bleeding, but in spite of the twenty four year age gap, she soaked it up and both fighters smiled at each other in mutual appreciation as the bell rang to end round five.
Mika spasmodically switched to southpaw and was lowering her hands which meant she was getting caught with ever more jabs. When Mika attacked, Camila moved laterally and backwards out of range.
Mika’s best flurry of the fight, started with her connecting with a rare left hook to the head and a left right combination, just before the bell rang to end round seven. But Camila brushed it off, with confidence and courage.
Camila briefly wobbled Mika with a straight right in round nine and in the tenth round she met Mika’s final attack with counters to the body and head.
After the final bell, both sportingly hugged and the Judges’ scores of: 98-92, 100-90 X 2, reflected the gulf in performance.
What a talent and so much more to come. We’ve only just begun.
