Javier Zinzun Jr., left the gangs, drugs and violence of Santa Ana, California to fulfil his dream of designing boxing clothing.
Javier Zinzun Jr.’s adolescence was the same as that of thousands of young people in Santa Ana, California: deprived of what they call the ‘American Dream’. However, his life took an unexpected turn when he left gangs and drugs to design clothes for boxers until he got to know one of the best fighters of the moment, Saúl ‘Canelo’ Álvarez.
In an interview with Lester Silva, TUDN contributor, Zinzun Jr. recalls how a designer outfit for Ryan Garcia triggered Canelo’s interest in his work.
“What happened is that Canelo looked at a suit that I made for Ryan García in red that had his name on the chest and legs, and I realized that this design is used a lot in the fashion industry.
“So, one day Canelo went to visit Ryan at one of his fights and that’s when he saw the suit from him. He asked Eddy Reynoso, ‘find out who made that design for him.’
“My friend called me and told me that they were looking for me in Canelo’s gym because they liked one of my designs. I hung up on him because I thought it was not true, I thought it was a joke because 12 years ago I tried to meet Canelo and I couldn’t.”
From denial, Zinzun Jr. passed to faith, when he was received by Canelo and later, he had an invitation to his house to take his size and start designing.
“For me it was an honor. I went to Canelo’s house to take his measurments and design a pair of shorts for his fights. When he put them on he told me that he had never felt shorts so light and that they allowed him to move well.
“He started jumping, moving like he was boxing. For me it was a dream come true to see Canelo wearing one of my designs,” says Javier, who created a thriving design company for the best boxers and is looking towards a promising future.
Currently, Javier Zunzun Jr. works hand in hand with the World Boxing Council as a WBC CARES ambassador and attires champions Canelo, Ryan García, Julio César ‘Rey’ Martínez, Frank ‘Cuban Flash’ Sánchez, prospect Marc Castro …among others. Dressed to thrill!
