Bruce “Shu Shu” Carrington dug deep, utilizing heart, intelligence, and resilience to overcome the most demanding test of his professional career and cement his status as a world champion.
The unbeaten Brooklyn fighter, recovered from being badly shaken in the fourth round to eventually stop Carlos Castro in the ninth. It was a high-stakes battle for the WBC Featherweight Title, held Saturday night at the iconic Madison Square Garden. What a thriller!
Carrington (17-0, 10 KOs) closed the show with authority. After stunning Castro with a sharp right hand, he unleashed a devastating right-left-right combination that sent the challenger to the canvas on his back, unable to recover. The clock showed 1:42 remaining in the ninth, though the official knockout time was recorded at 1:29 after Castro failed to beat referee Charlie Fitch’s count.
With this victory, Carrington claims the WBC 126-pound world title, a belt left vacant after Stephen Fulton moved up in weight to face O’Shaquie Foster on December 6. Having previously won the WBC interim belt in July against Mateus Heita, this performance confirms Carrington as one of the fresh new faces of American boxing. For Castro, the loss marks only the second knockout defeat in a 13-year, 35-fight career.
