Hard hitting WBC flyweight champion Julio Cesar “Rey” Martínez connected perfectly with creme de la creme Coffee Tuesday media, to talk about his one division step up, on March 5 at Pechanga Arena in San Diego, against legendary Román “Chocolatito” Gonzalez, the conquerer of four weight categories.
Roman would have been fighting Juan Francisco Estrada for the third time; however, “Gallo” announced in recent days that he tested positive for COVID, a situation that led him to withdraw from combat. So, as bold as brass, Julio César Martínez banged on the front door knocker, volunteering to climb up to the 115 division to fight “Chocolatito”.
For Julio, this is a GREAT opportunity to redress the balance, because in his time, Chocolatito has dispatched a variety of Mexican. boxers. However, Martínez said he`s strong and robust not only physically but emotionally, because he wants to make history and now is the opportunity to do it. He enthused: “I`m feel very strong going up in weight. I`m fifty-six kilos and will slim to fifty-four during the week. I have the hunger, I`m ready for anything and I`ll go on to the attack!” I will face a tough and a great fighter who I greatly respect. But I`m very ambitious to become the first Mexican fighter to KO Chocolatito!
The flyweight champion, who`s well into his preparation at the Otomí Ceremonial Center, assured that even though Román has a lot of experience and comes to this match as the favourite, he`ll: “Bring everything…except fear!”
Regarding the plans to stick around in the super flyweight division, Julio clarified that this is something that he will discuss at the time with his team, since one of his goals is to unify the flyweight title and perhaps return to 115 pounds, but that will be decided in the future.
Julio plans to hit “A purple patch” against Chocolatito, so accordingly he`s dyed the top of his mop mauve!
World Boxing Council President Mauricio Sulaiman, explained that the WBC authorized the champion Julio Cesar to move up to the super flyweight division, but that regardless of the result Julio will continue to reign as flyweight monarch, and in case of winning, he will have to take a decision of which division to stay in.
Being such an important fight, Julio Cesar’s trainer, Mauricio Aceves Gallegos, asked the WBC President to have a commemorative belt at stake since it is a clash of two great world champions. Given this request, Mauricio was very proud of the loyalty of the Martinez team, so he will pass the request to the Board of Governors.
