Undisputed lightweight champion Fighting Irish Katie Taylor, will thus defend her title against the unified WBC featherweight world champion and Pride of Puerto Rican Amanda Serrano, this Saturday night at the legendary Madison Square Garden in New York.
Both fighters were on NBC’s Today Show. They also scaled the Empire State Building and together they activated a symbolic switch that on Saturday will be hit, illuminating the colors of the Puerto Rican and Irish flags across the skyline of New York.
Both looked relaxed, very confident and sure that this Saturday, they will make history with this fight in the 135-pound division, since they will be the first female fighters to be the star main event at the legendary Madison Square Garden.
Ireland’s Taylor (20-0, 6 KOs) puts all her lightweight belts on the line for the sixth time since winning them in June 2019 in an outright war with Delfine Persoon and defeating the Belgian in a thrilling rematch in England, before fending off challenges from Miriam Gutierrez, Natasha Jonas, Jennifer Han and Firuza Sharipova. And this fight has more keen edged, piquet flavor, as Taylor beat Amanda’s sister Cindy in Boston in October 2018.
Puerto Rican Serrano (42-1-1, 30 knockouts) already has an unrivaled legacy in the sport, as a seven-weight world champion. The champion based in Brooklyn will enter the fight, after knocking out Daniela Bermudez in March, dominating Yamileth Mercado in August and then beating Miriam Gutierrez.
The mega fight which is promoted by Matchroom Boxing, in association with promoter Most Valuable Promotions, will be televised on DAZN.
