The World Boxing Council super-featherweight champion, Alycia Baumgardner (12-1, 7KOs) will face IBF and WBO champion Mikaela Mayer (17-0, 5KOs), on September 10 at the O2 Arena in London.
Both warriors have exchanged glances, challenges and words on social networks, but Baumgardner is sure that she will end that rivalry on the day of the fight.
“When we are old, Mayer will continue to have flashbacks of Alycia Baumgardner. Mayer will remember the first time my name came out of her mouth and she’ll wish she hadn’t. I am sure that I have all the tools to defeat her, and I will come out with my hand aloft,” tersely commented Baumgardner.
This intense rivalry dates back to Baumgardner’s sensational one-punch fourth-round knockout of former champion Terri Harper to win the WBC super featherweight title. Mayer, who had just unified the IBF/WBO belts a week earlier, had already developed a rivalry with Harper, hoping to take her on, but Baumgardner scuttled her plans.
Baumgardner vs. Mayer will be the backup fight to the highly anticipated clash between undefeated Claressa Shields (12-0, 2KOs) and Savannah Marshall (12-0, 10KOs).
