Pushing, shoving, egg in the face, scuffling bawling and brawling, as tempers fray and are then completely lost, is rapidly becoming an aggravating, aggressive and deeply concerning factor in Boxing, which is supposed to be… the Noble Art.
In the film Anger Management, Dr Buddy Rydell memorably warns: ‘Temper is the one thing you can`t get rid of by losing it.” Yet in a sport which is supposed to be everything to do with self control and discipline, Boxers are currently losing it as press conferences, ridiculously prolonged and provocative stare offs and weigh ins, giving in to spilling over emotions, spiraling impulses and regrettable temper tantrums.
At the World Boxing Council`s weekly Martes A Cafe Press Conference, WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman stated: ”It is embarrassing. We have expressed countless times, our concern about this. There`s going to an accident one of these days, which will cancel a fight and it`s going to put a huge black eye into the Sport of Boxing.
”We have just had the Boxing Grand Prix in Saudi Arabia with sixty-four fights and not one single incident. All the kids, shaking hands, then going into the ring to box. That`s what it`s all about.”
