Mexican American Oscar De la Hoya defended the WBC welterweight championship, defeating Puerto Rican Wilfredo Rivera  by TKO in the 8^th round,. The fight was at Caesar´s Hotel Casino, Atlantic City, New Jersey. It ended at two minutes 48 seconds, with the timely intervention of Referee Joe Cortez, the Judges were Sergio Silvi, Roland James Davies, and John Riley.
