A pay check and a victory recorded in the archives is significant, but a special Belt recognizing burgeoning and blossoming talent striving, in the fast lane of the highway, towards an Absolute Green and Gold Belt challenge, is the acceleration, worthy of The District of Colombia, Maryland and Virgina, so it`s been inaugurated as the DMV Belt.

Some very talented boxers have come and continue to come from this golden triangle, and the idea of much more than a fledgling belt, has come from the legendary Don Majeski, who is a font of ideas, initiative, encouragement, innovation and evolution in boxing. Don puts it this way;
”I wanted a belt that people could identify with, The locals call the area DC, Maryland, Virginia. One boxer Nicholson is from Maryland, the other Aleem is from Virginia. And it was the best local fight we`ve had in twenty years and we had to do something. There`s a boxing wealth per capita here, equal to anywhere in the United States. So for which portraits to put on the belt, the best DC fighter was Bob Foster and for Virginia Pernel Whitaker and multiple champ Sugar Ray Leonard from Maryland and the most iconic fighter ever from the region Joe Gans. That is a belt to aspire to. It`s as beautiful a belt as any world championship one I`ve ever seen. And I said, maybe this can kick off an initiative to encourage regional fights. We can also have a Gotham for fighters from the New York City Area and an Angelino Belt for boxers who come from the Los Angeles Area. We can have a belt for Chicago. It`s something to encourage the local fighters.

”An example is Sugar Ray Leonard before he was champion fought Johnny Gant. They fought back then for the Maryland State Title. They drew twenty one thousand people. We did fights in Montreal…Stephane Ouellet Vs Dave Hilton three times. We drew 18,000, 19,000 and 18,000. This is the stuff that boxing is made from and I`ve said, we`ve overlooked this. I hope this new belt encourages local fighters to fight each other as it shows you have achieved something. When Aleem and Nicolson saw the belt they exclaimed: ”Holy cow, and then they outdid themselves, and every fighter in the arena came up and asked about it. They were over the moon.
”You can always have a result in a record book, but that belt is a tangible asset to hang on to. Your great grand kids can say…my Great Grandpa won that!”
Don was ringside for the fight on this so special night, and this is his vivid, observant and action packed report. It was a bout worthy of this lovely new DMV Belt:
