As reported after my presence during the ABC annual Conference in Las Vegas at the beginning of august, the WBC was encouraged to see the proactive work which took place during such. One topic in particular is scoring criteria.
Scoring Criteria is the key for performance of judges. It needs to be transparent and clear in order to achieve uniformity and consistency. Criteria is like language so it needs to have perfect wording to reflect its principles and generalities so everyone can fully understand and execute according to such criteria.
The WBC is in absolute support of the new criteria regarding knockdowns set in writing by the ABC for immediate application in the USA . This is accepted and consistent to our guidelines and will be taught in all training and certification processes of the NABF and WBC with immediate effect on all WBC world wide championship fights.
The WBC hereby congratulates the ABC on taking this important step towards addressing officiating and its many needs to continue improving of the benefit of our sport.
The specific amendment is the following:
It is mandatory to score 10-8 on a round where a fighter is knocked down, unless there is an unquestionable outstanding domination from the boxer that was knocked down. Only then may the round be scored 10-9 for the fighter who knocked down his/her opponent.
Here is the ABC full document with regards to scoring criteria for boxing judges:
