Next Wednesday, February 15, at the New York Athletic Club (180 Central Park South, New York), an event will be held to remember Battling Siki.
It`ll take place within the framework of “Black History Month”, led by the President of the WBC, Mauricio Sulaimán, the New York Athletic Club and the filmmaker Ashley Morrison for the premiere of his film “Return to your Corner”, which describes the haunting life of Louis Mbarick Fall, known as Battling Siki.
One hundred years ago, Battling Siki, rose from poverty, fought his way across the ocean and despite adversity and prejudice, became the first African world champion in any sport.
Louis Fall was born on September 22, 1897 in Senegal. When he was a child, he was brought to Paris, where he was abandoned on the streets. Even so, he became a decorated war hero for France and despite his lungs being damaged by mustard gas during the war, his dedication and love for boxing led him on a journey that led to him becoming the first African boxing world champion, when he defeated the popular Georges Carpentier in 1922. Unfortunately, discrimination cut short his career and at the age of 25 he was shot in the back and left to die on the streets of Manhattan. What lives on is his passion, his talent, and his drive to succeed in boxing.
