September 16 has become a great tradition for world boxing as year after year great combats have been held with the participation of the best boxers.
This tradition began on September 15, 1972 when Erubey “Chango” Carmona faced Mando Ramos at the Memorial Coliseum in Los Angeles, California, winning the WBC lightweight title by fast track in the eighth round.
However, the maximum representative in the National Holidays of Mexico has been Julio César Chávez with six title fights, who on September 13, 1984 won the WBC super featherweight world championship in a historic fight at the Olympic Auditorium, also in Los Angeles, California, defeating Mario “Azabache” Martínez by TKO in 8 rounds.
From then on, great figures in world boxing have adopted this date to celebrate the most important fights of the year, among them: Salvador Sánchez, J. C. Chávez, Oscar de la Hoya, Floyd Mayweather, and now Canelo.
This weekend we will witness a historic fight when “Canelo” faces “GGG” for the third time, with the undisputed 168-pound championship at stake plus the beautiful “Guerrero Jaguar Zapoteca” belt.
