The WBC mourns the passing of former champion Rigoberto Riasco
Panamanian boxing sensation and former world boxing champion, Rigoberto “El Pequeno Veneno” Riasco, has died in Panama City at the age of 69.
Rigoberto was born on January 11, 1953, and was in boxing between 1968-1982, He built a professional record of 26 wins with 13 knockouts, 9 losses and 4 draws.
On April 3, 1976, he was crowned world champion by defeating Japanese Waruinge Nakayama in eight rounds at the New Panama Gym in Panama City and won the vacant WBC super bantamweight world championship, being recognized in history as the first super bantamweight champion of the World Boxing Council.
He defended the title twice by defeating Dominican Livio Nolasco in Panama City and South Korean Dong Kyum Yum in South Korea and was defeated in his third defense by Japan’s Royal Kobayashi in Tokyo, Japan.
