Ilunga Makabu will defend the WBC cruiserweight title this Saturday, January 29, against Silver champion, Thabiso Mchunu…High Noon in Ohio.
The fighter born in the Democratic Republic of the Congo is a powerful, resilient, and resourceful boxer. However, his lack of fight exposure hasn´t yet brought him the recognition he deserves.
All this changed thanks to Eddy Reynoso and Saúl Álvarez as Makabu fame gained considerably, when in the 59th edition of the WBC Convention, the trainer of “Canelo” asked the WBC Board of Governors for the opportunity to fight Makabu, with the WBC cruiserweight championship at stake.
So, the spotlight fell on Ilunga, and the World started to pay attention to his career.
He is the Champion with the second highest knockout ratio, just behind Artur Beterbiev. His last loss was six years ago, and he has six wins by way of KO in his last eight fights. Southpaw Makabu is a great champion in his own right.
Now, he faces Mchunu for the second time in his career. Thabiso is as a tough and seasoned challenger. This is Ilunga´s chance to shine, with no margin for error. He´s good and ready to defend his crown in style, so he remains on course to fight Canelo, who himself is seeking a fifth weight division championship plaudit.
