Rex Walker is a real life cowboy, tall lean, tough, handsome, courteous and genial.
Rex and Family are the owners of Sombrero Stables, on a beautiful ranch based in Colorado. From its establishment in 1952, today it`s the largest provider of saddle horses in the entire United States. Rex who`s a natural leader, spotted the World Boxing Council and liked what he saw and so did we! Rex who’s been in the saddle for most of his life is a popular member of the WBC Governors. We caught up with him on the trail for this interview:
Why did you decide to join the WBC and in what year was that?
In 1996 I joined the WBC. I had worked to establish a boxing Commission for the State of Colorado as we did not have a State Commission at that time. I had been judging professional fights in Colorado and my home state of Quintana Roo, Mexico. I developed a close friendship with Mauricio Moreno who was very active in the WBC. He suggested I join the WBC. After looking at many of the organizations I felt the WBC was ethically the strongest organization so I joined the WBC.
You`ve done so much leading the Youth Committee encouraging so many youngsters, many of whom have gone on to become champions. What of your achievements in accomplishing this are you proudest of and why?
My proudest fighter is Canelo…he earned his first green belt through the Youth Program. To see a young man start out naive and end up world champion is the greatest success story I could ever ask for. We have had over 900 youth fights all over the world. I have made friends in countries I never knew existed. It isn’t about what you have in life, it is about who you have in your life and at 87 I am a blessed man with all of my WBC family.
When did you become a Governor and then Vice President, and your achievements in so doing?
Jose Suliaman asked me in South Africa, at the convention, if I would be interested in running a program for young boxers. Having worked in rodeos, keyed for young cowboys, I had experience leading young men into becoming world champion cowboys. With Jose’s help, I had confidence we could build a successful program that led young boxers to being world champions and we did.
Why is the World Boxing Council the finest of the four major organizations?
In my opinion it is the best organization due to the rules and guidelines set up by Jose when he became President of the organization. His foresight and concern for boxers led him to put safety first for all boxers. He treated most boxers like they were his own children and always guided them in the right direction. Today, Mauricio, has followed his fathers vision and does an outstanding job leading such a wonderful organization instituting his own visions, which are outstanding and always thinking about what is best for boxers.
Happy Trails,
Rex Ross Walker
