
Showtime Sports Documentary Films will air the documentary Macho: The Hector Camacho Story, a documentary that deals with the extraordinary life, career and death of one of the best Puerto Rican champions in history.
The premiere will be on Friday, December 4 at 9 p.m. ET / PT on SHOWTIME, two weeks after the eighth anniversary of the tragic death of “Macho.”
Camacho died on November 24, 2012 at the age of 50, after being shot and critically injured, in Bayamón, Puerto Rico. He was in intensive care at a hospital, until doctors ruled that he was brain dead. The family eventually agreed to have him disconnected from an artificial respirator.
The report contains relevant interviews with María Matías, Camacho’s mother, as well as with her sisters and Héctor Camacho Jr. In addition, he recounts the struggles he had with addictions and the emotional problems he suffered in his life, when he was one of the main figures of his generation. He finished his career with a record of 79-6-3.
“Macho Camacho’s charisma, boxing prowess and unique style made him a sports icon and, for a time, one of boxing’s biggest stars. When he stepped into the ring, everyone knew it was ‘Macho Time,’ “Stephen Espinoza, president of sports and events programming for Showtime Networks Inc., said in a statement.
During his illustrious career in boxing, “Macho” fought battles with renowned fighters such as Roberto Durán, Julio César Chávez, Félix “Tito” Trinidad, Sugar Ray Leonard and Oscar de la Hoya.
