
We have received the sad news of the death of former world champion Peter Mathebula, the first black South African boxer to win a world title.
Mathebula won the WBA fly title in 1980 by defeating Tae Shik Kim of South Korea via points at the Los Angeles Olympic Stadium.
Mathebula, who was born on July 3, 1952, died near Johannesburg at age 67 after being hospitalized for two weeks.
The World Boxing Council and its President Mauricio Sulaimán Saldívar, send Peter’s family and friends their deepest condolences, at this moment of grief, tempered by great memories.
