The thousands of young people who dedicate themselves to boxing in our country, deserve immediate attention.
The power games and the personal interests of few, have pummeled amateur boxing in Mexico, on to the canvass.
The facts speak for themselves and the results in Olympic, Pan-American games and all kinds of international competition are clear evidence that the current format just doesn’t work.
The WORLD BOXING COUNCIL has remained silent, respecting processes but now it is necessary to clarify all aspects, because being silent in the face of an ongoing crisis means being complicit.
The World Boxing Council created a committee to support amateur boxing without any interest other than serving as a platform for organized activity and protection of athletes.
It has worked tirelessly and with the exemplary support of civil associations diligently established under the law that work, with many states serving thousands of boxers via skills, training and certification of ring officers and doctors to ensure the safety integrity of activity.
Groups like the Mexican Union of Boxing of Excellence (UMBE) and the Association of Amateur Box of Tamaulipas (ABATAM), which have national representation, have found in the WBC Amateur all the support required to continue with their boxing activities.
Unfortunately, the only thing they have found in the Mexican Boxing Federation, has been harassment and permanent roadblocks. They systematically single out fighters in the state amateur boxing federations involved in all activities of the amateur WBC, threatening to expel any person who participates in them.
We consider these threats as a cowardly act, full of impotence and totally unacceptable abuse of power.
But even more than that, an affront to the human rights of each individual by being prohibited from participating in activities organized for the promotion of the people’s sport, which is boxing.
Also an attempt against the right of free association covered by our very own Constitution of Mexico.
Next Monday, September 3, the Popular Games will open in Acapulco, Guerrero. Qualifying tournaments were scheduled to reach this competition, in which representatives from 22 states are confirmed.
As expected, the Mexican Federation of Amateur Boxing has already circulated its threat to all states, confirming in it that anyone who participates will be out of the qualifying processes towards the Olympic Games.
Finally, we just want to clarify that the only interest that inspires, motivates and moves the World Boxing Council, is to cooperate for the development of amateur boxing, and above all other interests, to take care of the health of amateur boxers.
