The World Boxing Council (WBC), through its Clean Boxing Program (CBP), reaffirms its commitment to the health and integrity of boxers by warning against the devastating risks of consuming synthetic cannabinoids.
Commonly known by names such as K2, Spice, Joker, Black Mamba, Kush, or Kronic, this substance is an artificially designed compound intended to mimic the psychotropic effects of natural marijuana. However, various scientific studies have shown that the active ingredients in these drugs are synthetic chemicals with extremely high and dangerous toxicity levels.
Why is it more dangerous than natural marijuana?
Unlike conventional cannabis, synthetic marijuana activates the brain and nervous system receptors with a much higher intensity than natural THC. This not only enhances its psychoactive effects but also makes its consumption highly addictive and, in many cases, potentially fatal.
An additional risk factor is the lack of transparency in its manufacturing: the chemical components of K2 are continually replaced by manufacturers to evade legal detection, making it impossible to know exactly what substances the athlete is introducing into their body.
Mechanism of Action and Immediate Effects
Whether in the form of dried herbs or liquid for vaporizers, these substances travel directly from the lungs to the heart and, through the bloodstream, reach the brain almost instantaneously. Due to their chemical nature, the effects are unpredictable and life-threatening from the very first contact.
Short-term physical effects:
Intense nausea, vomiting, and headaches.
Profuse sweating and severe dehydration.
Muscle spasms and tremors.
Critical increase in heart rate and body temperature.
Chronic Consequences and Irreversible Damage
The frequent use of synthetic cannabinoids can lead to serious pathologies that end an athlete’s career and even their life, such as:
Arrhythmias, renal failure, and tachycardia.
Severe hypertension, vascular collapse, and strokes.
Seizures and sudden death.
Furthermore, the psychological damage is profound, manifesting in episodes of psychosis, panic attacks, extreme paranoia, hallucinations, and outbreaks of uncontrollable violence.
Commitment to Clean Boxing
For the WBC, protecting the boxer is the number one priority. The consumption of these substances not only violates the principles of fair play but also represents a direct threat to the physical integrity of the competitor both inside and outside the ring.
