Guatemalan Lester Martínez made history by defeating American Immanuwel Aleem via unanimous decision to capture the World Boxing Council Interim Super Middleweight title this Saturday night at the Orange Show Events Center in San Bernardino, California.
Guatemala has never had a World Champion in its professional boxing history. Although the title Lester Martínez won tonight was an Interim one, this triumph must be highlighted and lauded, as it firmly puts the Central American nation on the international boxing map.
Martínez won wide on the judges’ scorecards: Carla Caiz (120-108), Fernando Villarreal (118-110), and Zachary Young (119-109), confirming the dominance he displayed throughout the fight despite a strong finish by Aleem in the championship rounds.
The fight took place amidst a great atmosphere at the Orange Show Events Center. Thousands of fans packed the venue to support Martínez, and the “Chapín” did not disappoint, although Aleem looked sharp with his offense at times.
Martínez pressed in the 12th round, coming forward, throwing more punches, and gaining the advantage in the final frame.
