In a night that will be long remembered, as one of the most dramatic battles, local prospect Andrew Cain achieved the most significant victory of his career by, coming back from the brink, after teetering on in, and stopping experienced, hard hitting Mexican contender Alejandro “Konejo” González in a WBC World Bantamweight title eliminator.
The bout, held amidst an electrifying atmosphere at the cavernous Echo Arena in Liverpool, maintained a frantic pace from the opening bell. However, the drama reached its crescendo in the eighth round when González landed a searing body shot that sent Cain to the canvas.
Still struggling to catch his breath, Cain was forced to take a knee for a second time under the relentless windmill pressure of the Mexican. With only ten seconds remaining in the round, it appeared the Briton’s dream was fading and that “Konejo” would take the victory home to Mexico. At that point, albeit momentarily, it was almost within his grasp and within the scope of his fists. But then…it slipped through his fingers.
Against all the odds, Cain emerged for the ninth round almost completely recovered. In an unexpected turn of events, the local fighter immediately changed the tone of the fight. With great precision, Cain dropped González, shifting the momentum of the contest. Seconds later, he landed a power punch that sent the Mexican back to the canvas once more.
Seeing that González could not effectively respond to or fully defend himself from the raining torrent of punishment, the referee intervened to save him and stop the fight, sparking euphoria and relief within and throughout . With this extraordinary turning the tables victory, Andrew Cain positions himself in a direct line for the 118-pound world championship, making it clear he possesses all the tools, hammers and saws necessary to wear the Green and Gold belt.
