BROOKLYN, New York – In a display of focus, dedication, discipline, and tempered power, undefeated Briton Dalton Smith became the new WBC Super Lightweight world champion by spectacularly knocking out Puerto Rico’s Subriel “El Orgullo de Maternillo” Matías in the fifth round.
The card, held this Saturday at the iconic Barclays Center, witnessed one of the strongest performances by a visiting fighter on New York soil. Smith, entered as the betting underdog, but audaciously faced the feared Puerto Rican puncher, imposing his pinpoint anvil hewn power from the opening bell.
From the first round, Smith made his intentions crystal clear, landing powerful rights that surprised and shook Matías. Although Matías attempted to establish his signature pressure and devastating power—even cutting the Briton’s left eyebrow in the fourth—Smith never yielded.
The stunning impact arrived in the fifth round; after a ferocious exchange, where Smith’s speed overcame Matías’ power, the Briton landed three jolting rights in quick succession that sent Matías to the canvas. Although he managed to get up with difficulty, he wobbled forward and was visibly unsteady, forcing the referee to wave off the fight immediately.
With this victory, Dalton Smith maintains his perfect record, moving to 18-0 with 14 KOs, and establishing himself as the new dominant force at 140 pounds. Matías falls to 23-3, losing his crown in the first defense of his second reign.
