The WBC Boxing Grand Prix represents a firm commitment by the World Boxing Council to modernize the competitive structure of professional boxing.
For this tournament, a special set of regulations has been adopted, incorporating technical and operational adjustments aimed at making fights more dynamic, transparent, and fair—both for the fighters in the ring and for the fans.
Open scoring after the second and fourth rounds
During the bout, the judges’ official scorecards are partially revealed after the second and fourth rounds. The scores are communicated to both corners and announced publicly, allowing fighters to understand the real state of the contest and adjust their tactical approach as the fight progresses.
Thirty-second warning before the end of each round
Each round includes a warning bell 30 seconds before it ends. This signal encourages stronger finishes, as fighters tend to increase punch output and offensive pressure to leave a better impression on the judges during the closing moments.
Mandatory results: no draws
The Grand Prix format requires that every fight produce a winner. If the scorecards are tied at the end of the bout, the contest is first decided using the tournament’s complementary scoring system. If the tie persists, a panel of WBC commissioners intervenes to determine the winner, ensuring continuity and structure within the competition.
Enhanced Scoring Program (ESP)
In addition to traditional numerical scoring, each round receives a qualitative classification based on the level of dominance: close, moderate, dominant, or highly dominant. This system allows for a more precise assessment of each boxer’s performance and impact round by round.
Use of instant replay
Event officials are authorized to review specific actions via video, particularly in controversial situations such as questionable knockdowns, illegal blows, accidental cuts, or potential head clashes. Instant replay contributes to fairer decisions and reduces errors that could affect the outcome of a fight.
Official WBC Kings gloves
For the tournament, gloves designed by the organization itself were introduced. In the heavyweight division, 12-ounce gloves with increased volume are used, designed to better accommodate larger hands and provide an added level of protection compared to traditional gloves.
This set of measures responds to a central objective: to elevate competitive quality, reinforce fighter safety, and provide greater clarity for fans.
With the Boxing Grand Prix, the WBC not only introduces a different type of tournament, but also sets a clear path toward the modernization of boxing, integrating innovation, control, and spectacle into a single competitive concept.
