The President of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, had an inspiring meeting with boxer Diana “Bonita” Fernández during her recent visit to Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua.
The President highlighted Diana Laura Fernández (36-4-1, 5KO) as a great inspiration for other women. Last November, the Juárez fighter won the WBC Silver Flyweight title after defeating American Nayeli “La Bikina” Rodríguez (6-1-1) by unanimous decision.
“This morning we took a moment to visit the place where Diana ‘La Bonita’ Fernández trains. Originally from Ciudad Juárez and a boxing champion, her discipline and consistency should be an example for everyone; she shows that women can be whatever we want to be,” expressed President Sheinbaum.
The President of Mexico received a pair of gloves from the 31-year-old champion, which she tried on for a brief practice session in the ring while discussing her own interest in sports with “Bonita” Fernández.
“In the mornings, I go running, and when I was young, I practiced ballet and was on the UNAM rowing team,” the President shared.
The boxer, excited by the visit, shared the moment on her social media:
“From woman to woman, anything is possible! What a joy to have you visit Ciudad Juárez and to be able to talk with you about the improvement of Mexico and this beautiful city. Wonderful things are coming for Ciudad Juárez. It was a pleasure to put on the gloves with you. What a great honor to meet a great woman and, above all, our first Mexican woman President,” wrote the WBC Silver Champion.
The meeting underscores President Sheinbaum’s admiration for effort and discipline in sports and celebrates Mexican women who achieve success on a global level.
